Rocking varsity rugby kicks off

The 2009 FNB Varsity Cup kicked off in Cape Town with a replay of last year's final between Maties and Ikeys.

Maties were winners once again beating the home side 12-10.

The Groote Schuur fields at UCT were packed to capacity to watch the highly anticipated clash and they were not disappointed.

It was a match of two halves due to the influencial wind, which is more prevalent when playing on the high-lying UCT grounds.

UCT played with the wind in the first half and fl! yhalf Matthew Rosslee had several long range attempts at the post.

Ikeys went into the break with a 10-3 lead, but Stellenbosch bounced back in the second half to get a 12-10 victory.

UCT scrumhalf Stu Commins scored a brilliant try, but left the field with a broken wrist later on.

Rosslee kicked a conversion and a penalty.

Ikeys failed to score in the second half as Maties scrumhalf, Donald Stevens kicked four penalties.
